Jewelry Appraisal

Fine jewelry is one of the most important purchases you’ll ever make. It’s an investment. At San Antonio Jewelry we recommend getting your jewelry appraised and insured to protect your purchase. Due to constant changes in the market, we recommend that you get an appraisal every three to five years.

Appraisals are completed in store by our owner, Jaime Goodwin, a graduate GIA gemologist. Jaime has been evaluating jewelry and producing appraisal documents since 1980.

What is an appraisal?

An appraisal is more than just a receipt for your piece; it is a detailed document of what the jewelry is to determine its monetary value. A jewelry appraisal establishes the value of your jewelry by documenting the exact details and overall quality of your item.

What does it include?

Your written appraisal comes on our official letterhead with contact information in case of follow-up questions from insurance agencies. It includes:

  • A complete description of the item
  • The type of metal the item is set in
  • Diamond or gemstone characteristics
  • If applicable, the 4 C’s of your diamond (cut, color, clarity and carat weight) and any information
    about side stones
  • A photograph in color
  • The total appraised value

Why should you get an appraisal?

Common reasons for appraisals are for resale or for tax/estate/insurance purposes.  Insurance companies require appraisals to keep record of the value of  your jewelry in case it is ever los, damaged, or stolen. The documentation of the exact characteristics of your jewelry can also be used as proof of ownership in case your ring is recovered by police after being stolen. It’s important to get an accurate and complete appraisal of your jewelry so that you can recover your costs in case of loss. An up-to-date appraisal also keeps record of the current value of your piece, in case you wish to sell it in the future.

How does it work?

We first thoroughly clean your items thoroughly before beginning the evaluation process. Our gemologist performs detailed inspection of the item, market research to compare prices to similar items, and will then write the complete and thorough appraisal.

How much do we charge?

Our services start at $85 per piece and vary depending on the intricacy of the item. All jewelry valued over $1,000 purchased in store and online includes a complimentary jewelry appraisal.
